The Retreat’s Adopt-A-Family Program Is Open

The Retreat’s Adopt-a-Family program is open and ready for donations for the 2022 holiday season. This beloved community program collects holiday gifts and gift cards for families in need. This year, it will run through December 12.

The Retreat established Adopt-a-Family nearly 20 years ago when its employees in advocacy recognized a need in their clients. They collected and distributed one gift each for their clients’ children, serving about 20 families in total. Now, this holiday giving program provides for 200 families, more than 450 individuals, all of whom are current Retreat clients.

The Retreat is a community-based, not-for-profit agency that provides domestic violence services for children and adults, support for survivors, and violence prevention education throughout Suffolk County. The free services include counseling, advocacy, legal assistance, shelter, case management services, and a comprehensive fatherhood training course.

“The Adopt-a-Family program is an opportunity for donors to share the joy of the season with Retreat families – children, parents, and single adults,” said Loretta K. Davis, executive director at The Retreat. “Donors often provide gifts when they barely have enough money for their own families, and our clients are extremely grateful for these acts of kindness and generosity.”

Providing gift cards or cash gives the added gift of independence — clients are able to make the decision of what toys, games, and clothing to purchase for their families.
