On Sunday, March 12, the Parrish Art Museum is opening two exhibitions featuring work by young artists from area schools, new acquistions by Studio Lenca, and art projects created with two Parrish Artists-in-Residence.
The museum’s annual Student Exhibition presents work by more than 1,000 students from nearly 50 Eastern Long Island schools, along with projects created during the residency with Darlene Charneco. “Chisme,” features an installation of 15 woodcut figures of Latin migrant workers by Salvadoran artist Jose Campos, aka Studio Lenca, with works by students participating in his residency at the Museum.
“We are thrilled to open these two exuberant and meaningful exhibitions at the same time at the Museum,” said Deputy Director of Education Martha Stotzky. “The Student Exhibition invites the entire community to celebrate the creativity of the young artists and dedicated teachers. ‘Chisme’ features delightful work by Studio Lenca, created in partnership with migrant workers. Together, these projects are powerful and relevant to our communities.”
The exhibitions open with a private preview day for the participants in the residencies, and Student Exhibition artists, their families, and their teachers on March 11. Guests will enjoy refreshments including fresh baked cookies from the Museum Café by Elegant Affairs, plus live performances by musician, storyteller, and naturalist Johnny Cuomo. The Young Artists Reception (Pre-K through grade 8) is scheduled from 12 to 2 PM; High School Artists Reception is from 2 to 4 PM. There is no admission fee for the receptions; registration is strongly encouraged.
The show runs through April 16.
