2001 was the last time Peter Ciaccia ran in the New York City Marathon, now it’s his turn to cross the finish again, for a purpose.
During his 18 years as President of Events for New York Road Runners (NYRR), Ciaccia concentrated on delivering unique events that reflected the spirit of New York City. His passion for the running community extended to people of all ages and abilities, which led to more inclusive events for athletes with disabilities, youth wheelchair racers, seniors, and much more.
Upon retiring from New York Road Runners at the close of 2018, Ciaccia relocated to Montauk, and decided to get involved helping the community. He joined the Montauk Food Pantry, where he volunteers every week. When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, he realized that many families struggled to put food on their tables. That led Ciaccia to launch the Need 2 Feed Virtual 5K Run/Walk fundraiser in the Spring of 2020, which raised over $12,000 to support the pantry.
Food insecurity still exists for many in the community. Currently the Montauk Food Pantry is servicing over 250 families and homebound seniors every other week. According to Ciaccia, it’s approximately $20,000 per month to purchase the food the pantry distributes — and right now, the price of food is higher than ever.
“Fundraising plays a tremendous role in supporting the Montauk Food Pantry,” said Alice Houseknecht, the director of the Montauk Food Pantry. “Pre- and post-pandemic, the Montauk community has always come together by donating to help the fight against food insecurity.”
Ciaccia launched the Need 2 Feed Finish Line GoFundMe Campaign, where he is calling on his beloved running community (and others) to pitch in.
“We set an ambitious goal to raise $20,000”, said Ciaccia, “but knowing how supportive the running community has always been to me, I am confident we will successfully cross our Need 2 Feed Finish line.”
