Sound View Greenport Presents “100 Days of Jazz,” a music residency program featuring street performers from New York City.
Beginning on January 25, and led by the hotel’s Kulture Collective platform, Sound View will host 10-day residencies for 10 performers and groups. With the mission to fuel artists’ imagination and inspiration, the hotel’s team explored the streets of New York City to search for unique talents to partake in the residency.
To highlight sensational street performers, the featured musicians were each selected for their sounds, stories, and perspectives. During the residency, the musicians can use every corner of the hotel — the lobby, sidewalks, beach — as a practice station. On Friday and Saturday evenings, they will perform two sets for guests at Sound View’s Halyard Restaurant Piano Bar.
The Kulture Collective platform aims to foster togetherness and community through hosting shared experiences rooted in culture and creativity. “100 Days of Jazz” is the latest in the hotel’s artist in residency programs.
Kicking off the residency, from January 25 through February 3, will be The Kidwell Sisters.
“As classically and theatrically trained singers and actors, The Kidwell Sisters have been able to use their experience to bring professional quality performances to the streets of Manhattan,” reads the Sound View website. “Out of work through the beginning of the Pandemic, they married their necessity and creativity to create an unconventional career. Working together for the first time, they have put together a show that has stopped many New Yorkers in their tracks, reminding them that if they can make it there, they can make it anywhere.”
Starting February 6 through February 15, will be the Sammy Buttons Experience. Since he began busking, Sammy has met a variety of talented musicians, including Bernell Jones who will be joining him at Sound View.
“A fourth generation piano/keyboard player, following in the footsteps of his great grandfather, grandfather, father, and all of his siblings, Sammy Buttons has loved music all his life,” reads the site. “From jam sessions in the ‘80s to working pre-production for local artists in the back of his courier service office, music has been a lifelong passion. When the pandemic began, Sammy made the decision to change his path. In that time Sammy realized he could make a living playing music and as the city began to reopen, he had to choose between reopening his courier business, or delve into a new journey in his life. He chose the latter.”
