Many of us have heard the saying, “the only constant in life is change.”
What that means from the Vedic perspective is that everything is always evolving. We are always moving towards greater and greater sophistication. This concept is fairly easy to comprehend but many of us resist change and therefore resist evolution.
We prefer to stay in the comfort of what we already know. The Veda teaches us that staying in the comfort of what we already know is a dangerous place to be as it goes against evolution and ultimately leads to suffering. In order to avoid suffering, we want to stay in the flow of life. We want to align ourselves with the laws of nature, with God, and trust that Nature knows best.
We must surrender to something bigger than our small self. I like to imagine this concept as a river flowing into the ocean. The river being an individual and the ocean being greater and greater sophistication, our expanding consciousness. If I am like a river flowing towards the ocean, it would be more enjoyable to flow with the current instead of trying to swim upstream.
To dive even further into this concept of evolution, the Veda explains that there is always one of three things occurring in every given moment: creation, maintenance, or destruction.
All three are necessary for evolution, however we want to place most of our attention on creation. When we place our attention on creation, we stay in the flow of life. This is a good place to be as creation mode is where new ideas, relationships, adventures, and discovery happen. New ways of thinking transpire and life feels exciting.
Maintenance mode is necessary to keep things around that are still relevant but if we stay here too long, suffering occurs. Nature does not like to be stagnant. If something becomes stagnant for too long, destruction occurs so that creation can occur again. Evolution, or change, is a beautiful flow, surrender to it.
